Day trip to Thursday Island

This morning we had an early start, meeting up at 7.20am for our bus to Seisa wharf to board our ferry to Thursday Island.

The ferry ride took about 1 hour, slightly longer this morning due to the strong winds. During the trip we were given informative commentary on surrounding islands and history and a short video to watch.

We arrived on the island and had a few hours spare to explore the island and shops before boarding our prebooked bus tour. To be honest, it doesn't take a long time to explore the island or shops, but it's very pretty, so nice to have a little walk around.

Our bus tour took us one a tour of the island, stopping in at Green Hill Fort to explore and take photos of the amazing view. The photos just won't even come close to showing the true beauty of this place.

We saw Australia's most northerly cathedral (also the world's smallest). It features intriguing stained-glass windows honouring the 200 passengers lost on the Quetta shipwreck and rare indigenous artworks illustrating biblical scenes.

Of course you can't have a visit to Thursday island without having a beer in the Torres Hotel - Australia's last (or most northerly) pub!

After our tour we headed off down to the bakery for George to try one of their famous crayfish pies! He was impressed .... And then regretted not buying some crayfish off one of the guys off a local island that pulled his boat up to the caravan park last night trying to make some money out of his days catch!
