Glen Davis (5th July 2020)
Took a drive out west and one of the places we visited was a town called Glen Davis. Glen Davis was an oil-shale mining town and in its heyday it was home to around 2500 people. The works closed in 1952 and nowadays, although there are a few houses in town, this is basically a ghost town compared to its former past. No shops or restaurants or fuel stations, but the scenery is absolutely spectacular.
The town is surrounded by huge vertical sandstone cliffs which just create this natural beauty you don’t see too often. They apparently do run tours of the ruins of the oil works so we would love to head back one weekend to camp out and join the tour.
We also called into Glen Alice, again not much there to see other than an old church and cemetery, but such a beautiful drive. We visited Capertee, which has some old churches and a beautiful old pub ... unfortunately due to COVID 19, the pub was closed.
Lastly we stopped off at the lookout over the Capertee Valley. Did you know that this is the world’s second largest canyon?? The Capertee Valley is actually 1 km wider than the Grand Canyon, but it’s not as deep. How cool is that!
