Ward 21, Morisset Hospital & Watagan Plane Wreck (01.04.18)
Built in the early 1930's, Ward 21 was constructed as a maximum-security facility to house those who had been judged as criminally insane. This housed some of the most dangerous people, including Australia's first real serial killer, William MacDonald. After 60 years of operation, Ward 21 was permanently closed in 1990.
Nowadays there isn't much left, buildings are falling down, the walls are covered in graffiti (some which is quite good though!), burnt out cars are scattered around the property and glass and rubble covers the ground.

Morisset Hospital
Watagans Plane Wreck
After our visit to Ward 21, we left Emma and Jono and made our way out to the Watagans with our mate Adam in search of the plane wreck VH-RYU. Although Adam's directions left a lot to be desired, we did finally find it! From what we could find out, this Cessna Skyhawk left Cessnock Airport for a scenic flight over the Watagan Mountains. Shortly after take off it apparently experienced partial engine failure and crash landed, ending up suspended in a tree about a meter from the ground. All on board survived.
The strange thing we realised afterwards is that this plane crashed on Easter Sunday in April 2000 ..... we visited on Easter Sunday 2018!
