Southern Highlands (19th July 2020)
Headed to the southern highlands to a little town called Robertson. After turning off to head towards Robertson, the road was quite narrow but one of the more picturesque areas we’ve been to, as we wound our way past farms and old cottages and rolling green hills dotted with livestock. Did you know that the Australian movie, Babe, was filmed in and around Robertson!
So what is there to see and do?
If you are Sydney based and are looking for something to do one weekend, why not head down to the Southern Highlands, it’s only about 1 ½ hours from Sydney and there are so many interesting places to visit, Robertson is just one of them!
So what is there to see and do?
- Well first up we had to hit up 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼 to get our tourist photo! We have a whole page on our website dedicated to the ‘big things’ we have visited across Australia! You’ll find The Big Potato on the Illawarra Highway right in the middle of town.
- Next was the 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 (107 Hoddle Street) which was originally established in 1936. This place is packed full of cheese, oils, relishes, cordials …. Of course we had to buy some to take home! There is also an onsite café and a store which will give you a typical country store experience. It was huge, it seemed to keep going on forever and was packed with a great mix of old and new (clothing, toys, bags, lights, homewares, crystals – you name it, they had it!).
- We called in to see the 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. You couldn’t get into the station itself and there was a gallery/museum onsite but it wasn’t open. We aren’t actually sure if this station and line is still used or not. There were some gardens and sculptures around as well so we took a wander around.
- We had intended on visiting the 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗶𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽 (4400 Illawarra Highway), which is famous for its huge array of sweet and savoury pies and tarts. Unfortunately about 100 or so Subaru’s and bikes also thought it was a great place to visit! We ended up driving past with the intention of stopping on our way back, but about an hour or so later when we passed, the line was still out onto the road …. Next time maybe!
- Just a short drive out of town we entered the Budderoo National Park and visited 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀, which was absolutely beautiful. The short walk from the picnic area takes you along a purpose built track through the forest to a couple of viewing platforms to see the waterfall and escarpment below. The walk then continues around to the top of the waterfall, where the Kangaroo River flows down and cascades over the edge. There are lots of rockpools you can explore along the top of the waterfall.
