Bloomfield Falls

Headed off this morning to Cape Tribulation, we could have either taken the Bloomfield Track or CREB Track. As we had both now done the Bloomfield, we wanted to try the CREB. There had been a bit of rain last night so we weren't sure if the track would even be open, or the condition (did it even rain there), so we headed off to check it out.

On the way we called in to have a look at the Bloomfield Falls. A short walk from the car park over very rocky ground leads you to these falls.

The CREB track was originally constructed as the service road for one of the Cairns Regional Electricity Boards power lines.  The track is a challenging 4WD route over the McDowall Range, between Ayton and Daintree.  There are very steep clay slopes and numerous creek crossings, as well as the longer and deeper crossing of the Daintree River.

The scenery and track was ever changing today, very scenic. One minute you were travelling on a long stretch of gravel road, the next climbing a wet clay hill or crossing a river.

It took us about 3 1/2 hours to complete the track, and it was a little scary at times, but overall, we enjoyed it and glad we can say we made it.

The track was quite wet in patches and you can totally see why it's closed in the wet. There were a few little slips and slides today, so would hate to see it any wetter.

Bit of angle here! Yes, there were some really steep hills!

And to that big black cloud that hung over us all day - thank you for letting us get through before dropping a bucket load of rain on the track!
